I can’t decide which I love more in this book, the words or the illustrations!  The rhyming story uses the model of “This is the house that Jack built” and follows Max and his family on a rollicking Halloween from morning til night.  The lilting text and the adorable watercolors of Max and friends make this an sweet, enchanting story.

It’s Halloween
by Jac Prelutsky is my Halloween standard.  I drag it out for some 3rd grade fun every year.  It’s a great way to introduce poetry to kids with the engaging warmhearted pieces about treats and goblins, pumpkins and bobbing for apples.  The whimsical illustrations and gentle good humor draw us in and the rhyming text carries us along.  It’s just a whole lot of fun. (note:  My copy is a million years old.  I’m sure the current edition has a different cover by now)

Every Mom will love this book as much as her kids do.  The ever capable monster mom in this book takes such very good care of her little guy, reminding him to brush his fangs and mixing up a little lizard juice for a treat.  She goes to all his beastball games and takes him swimming in the swamp.  It’s a tender story with the little twist that makes it oh so charming.

If you have sung, “I know an old lady who swallowed a fly…” as you rolled down the highway in a road trip sing-a-thon, the I’m pretty sure you’ll love this book.  The old lady in question here is no less quirky than the original and she swallows bits and pieces of Halloween leading up to a hilarious ending.  It’s a crazy romp that you can sing along to if you wish.  Silly drawings and  a fast pace, make it a page turner for kids, young and old.
